How many MC4 connectors do I need per string?
Usually two pairs per string: one pair to join the panel leads to the DC cable at the array, and one pair at the inverter or DCDB end. Add more for extension joints and keep about 10% spare. The calculator above counts this for you.
Can I mix MC4 connectors of different brands?
No. Always mate connectors of the same make and type. Mixed connectors may not seal or make proper contact, which can cause heating and melted joints.
Which cable sizes fit these connectors?
Standard MC4 contacts are available for 2.5, 4 and 6 sq mm solar cable. Choose the contact that matches your cable size and crimp it with a proper MC4 crimping tool.
Do I need Y-branch connectors?
Y-branch connectors are used to parallel two strings into one inverter input. For three or more strings in parallel use an array junction box with fuses instead.
